HCM CITY — Traffic congestion has eased in several areas in HCM City as many road barriers have been taken away, but the city's northeastern gateway has become even more jammed in recent months.
Vehicles travelling on Ha Noi Highway as well as National Roads 13 and 1A, which connect HCM City and the northeastern, Central Highland, central and northern provinces, move slowly at peak hours.
After the Tet holiday, when the city's Department of Transport closed Rach Chiec Bridge for expansion work, traffic became more congested, especially a street section near Suoi Tien Cultural Park.
The traffic overload on National Road 1A has also led to more traffic on Sai Gon Bridge, which is under maintenance. Traffic gridlock was expected to become worse in this area, city officials said.
Traffic on National Road 13 and Dinh Bo Linh Street has also slowed because of barriers for the project to expand Dinh Bo Linh Bridge.
The city has also deployed several solutions to help reduce traffic congestion in the area.
HCM City People's Committee has steered related departments and district-level authorities to arrange more staff in areas where traffic congestion often occurs.
Investors in transportation projects in the area have been asked to speed up their construction on projects that include the Sai Gon Bridge, Rach Chiec Bridge on Ha Noi Highway and Suoi Cai Bridge.
In order to deal with inner-city gridlock, the city is encouraging citizens to use public transport.
